Nadia (Nadja)

Portrait of Shtember's daughter Nadya who was an aspiring artist herself when this painting was done by her father.  Nadja remained in Russia after the Revolution and painted professionally for her career.

Photo #13 shows Nadja standing beside her painting. Note that she has an artists palette showing that she is an artists like her father.

This painting was also used for a Russian magazine cover that is in the possession of the family.The magazine is 'Sun of Russia' and is from March, 1914.  The entire magazine was a description of artists exhibitions of their works. According to the artcyclopedia.ru, Stember was in a group of artists of 'salon academicism.'  Representatives of the realistic trend called those artists 'Prisoners of Beauty', with the ' aim of promoting the development and propagation of art in Russia, the organization of exhibitions in Russia and abroad...'  They established the Association of Artists.  In their studios, they created amazing works of art, organized and held exhibitions, and participated in the work of charitable societies.  'All notable people of that time tried to visit Shtemberg's (Stember) studio in Moscow.'

This paintings was also made into a postcard in a series of Stember paintings.  Some were sold to fund a charity named 'Lubenskoye Society About the Care of Beggars.' Refer to the paragraph above in reference to charitable societies which is thought to be why so many of Stember's paintings were made into postcards (30 different paintings.)
