Family Photograph 64

This is the catalogue cover for the Christies Auction House sale of 'Fine Continental Pictures of the 19th and 20th Centuries' held on June 15, 1979 in London.

On page 27, it states that being offered is Lot 132* by V. Shtember signed and dated 1894-unstretched 85x60 inches (317 x 152cm) and is named 'The Temptation of St. Anthony'.  Unfortunately, when turning to the page to view the painting, it is missing.  The numbering goes from 131 to 133, accounting for the asterisk by Shtembers #132* presumably.

The mysterious part is, in Blouin Art Sales Gallery Index, it states that The Temptation of Saint Anthony was sold that day at a Hammer price of $5,054 but there is again no photo included of the painting.  In May, 1995 at a Christies Sale in London, the painting 'The Temptation of St. Heleron' sells for $11,326. (#126 on this site) . It is the same dimensions as 'St. Anthony's so it is presumed that they are the same painting and during that lapse of time, the named was changed to St. Heleron.

The painting was again offered for sale on November 28, 2012 through Bonhams in London with a minimum bid of $239,921 but was not sold.
