Model From Vienna

The postcard of this painting was obtained from a dealer in Romania by the family and notes the year as 1913 but in photo #18 in the photography section of this website, the family album shows Stember in his studio with this painting among others and it is noted as 1911.  Stember often painted using models and offered them for sale from his studio so it is possible that the painting was done in 1911 but did not sell until 1913.

On the back of the photo taken by the artist of this painting, his daughter wrote 'A Viennese'  Munich, Germany 1913. Note that in paintings # 145, 151, 142, 143 and 144, the vine and flower background is similar and was also painted in Munich. The artist traveled for new subjects to paint while he was doing contracted portrait paintings in many countries in Europe.  There are models from Italy, France, Germany and stories in his wife Nadia's diary of how she would find models for him, approach the women and then if agreeable, introduce them to her husband.
