St. Hilarion's Head
1894
St. Hilarion's Head is a 1894 portrait by the Russian artist Victor Stember.
This Painting or 'sketch' as noted by the artists daughter, is that of just the head of St. Hilarion from The Temptation of St. Hilarion.(# 126 ) Hilarion was a hermit who wrestled with his own demons and especially against lust, hence the subject of the painting.
See entry #126 for additional information on the entire painting.
Nadja Stember wrote in her diary of Stember: 'He painted the head of an old peasant for his picture 'A Temptation of Saint Anthony'. It is not known if this is the painting or if there is another.
